Christiana Melham is the Chief Executive of the National Association of Link Workers, the only UK and largest professional membership network for Social Prescribing Link Workers, which aims to increase professionalism and resilience while reducing isolation. She is the architect of the UK Annual Social Prescribing Link Worker Day/Conference, and an international Social Prescribing Link Worker champion.
The World Health Organisation describes health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Social prescribing is a transformative service that enables GPs and Primary Care Networks to deliver holistic services to their local population. Social prescribing link workers are the link between the community and General Practice. They are excuse-removers that enable people to take control of their health and wellbeing. As one social prescriber says: ‘We take the pressure off GPs thinking about their patient’s non-medical needs’.
Social prescribers achieve sustainable behaviour change by enabling people to overcome their biggest barriers, engaging with what matters to them, giving them a ‘new mind’ to see new possibilities and enabling access to coping strategies, this helps improve their wellbeing and reduces inappropriate reliance on health services.
